This project involved creating three large-scale digital watercolor murals for a children’s mental health hospital in Abu Dhabi.

The goal was to design calm, non-overstimulating landscapes that support children emotionally, creating a sense of safety and softness.

Designing for a children’s mental health environment comes with a strong sense of responsibility.

The murals needed to feel calm, light, and emotionally safe, avoiding harsh contrasts or visual clutter, while still offering gentle elements for discovery. All illustrations were created around real architectural constraints, including furniture layouts, partitions, and TV placements.

The three murals form one continuous visual world, with each room serving a distinct emotional purpose:
Patient Rooms — maximum calm and visual rest
Family Waiting Room — gentle exploration and comfort
Consultation Room — balance between calm and engagement

Patient Room – Calm First

The Patient Room mural was designed to be as light and soothing as possible.
Soft rolling hills, airy trees, and open sky were used to create a sense of space and calm, allowing children’s eyes to rest.

The composition was carefully adjusted around shelving and furniture so that the illustration supports the room rather than competing with it.

Family Waiting Room – Gentle Exploration

The Family Waiting Room required a slightly more explorative approach.

Additional narrative elements  pond, small houses, birds, and paths were introduced to give children something gentle to observe while waiting, without creating visual overload.

Consultation Room – Balance & Adaptation

The Consultation Room mural went through several refinements due to last-minute layout changes, including the addition of a TV placed centrally on the wall.

Thanks to a carefully layered file structure, the illustration was easily adapted — allowing pathways and landscape elements to flow naturally around the interruption while maintaining visual continuity and a calm atmosphere.

Color & Technique

All murals were created using a digital watercolor technique, allowing for soft color transitions, light textures, and an organic hand-painted feel.

Color palettes were intentionally kept muted and airy focusing on greens, soft blues, and warm neutrals to avoid overstimulation while maintaining warmth.

Seeing the murals installed in the real space was incredibly rewarding.

I work with boutique studios, architects, and brands on illustration projects where art supports and enriches spaces.
